“Slow down – let the rats’ race”
I was on a canal boat last week and spotted this sign on one moored up in
a beautiful stretch of tree-lined Derbyshire countryside, “Slow down – letthe rats race.” It got me thinking…, how much of our time do we spend running in a rat race of our own invention? I hope you’ll gain some new perspectives on the choices you have as you enjoy this Great News fromFiona and the team. Early Summer newsletter
Welcome to the early summer edition of Great News and 'hello' to all of
our regular readers.
Did you know that what you focus on grows? We each have thousands of
thoughts each day - some are helpful and others hinder us.
This edition of Great News includes a section on how to focus your
thoughts so that you influence the experiences you have - useful for
anyone who finds themselves fighting that inner negative chat.
We also have a story from a Cherokee Indian, and news about a mini
workshop on flexible working coming up in July. Read on here... http://www.greatcoachingservices.co.uk/downloads/What_you_focus_on_Grows.pdf
Take a snapshot of your life and career right now. Consider the various aspects of your life, your career, your relationships and your work-life balance. What about finances, health and social life?
Instead of giving it a passing thought, allocate 5 quality minutes doing our Wheel of Life self assessment exercise on our website. When you are ready you’ll find it under a link on the Home Page.
Alternatively, ask yourself the questions below to indicate how satisfied you are on a scale of zero to 10. 10 is when you are feeling at your best in that area.
1. First Area of my life eg Career: _____________________________
How satisfied am I in this area on a scale of 1 to 10?
.
What gives me energy here?
TIP - Energy givers are the things you do, see and experience that make you feel great.
.
What drains my energy here?
TIP - ‘Energy drainers' are situations, relationships and physical things around you or that you do which drain you.
.
Is what I want really something that energises me?
.
2. Second Area of my life eg Finances:___________________________
How satisfied am I in this area on a scale of 1 to 10?
.
What gives me energy here?
.
What drains my energy here?
.
Is what I want really something that energises me?
.
Repeat process 1 and 2 for your other areas; relationships, your work-life balance, your health and social life etc. Whichever heading make sense for you.
3. Next…
Once you have reviewed the main areas of your life, Step back and look at the results. Notice common themes. Notice what you can change which will have the biggest positive impact
4. You are now ready to set some GOALS
Write down what you want to be different and record your goals positively so that reading them inspires you. By writing them down in this way you dramatically increase your chances of achieving them.
My goal(s) for 2008 are:
.
Why?
This is important to me because…..
.
I feel ……… when I think about this goal
.
How will I know I have achieved it?
.
How will others know I have achieved it?
.
(Repeat the process for further goals)
Once finished, summarise the goals and make them visual. For example, if you want to save up for a new car, create a big and colourful drawing of your ideal car and stick it on the fridge.
If you want a hand making your goals become reality – then take advantage of the support we provide.
